McKinsey Recruiting Process: Application, Solve and Interviews
Understand McKinsey’s consulting application, possible Solve assessment, Personal Experience Interview and problem-solving interview.
Quick answer
This guide covers McKinsey's global entry-level and experienced-hire consulting recruitment for the 2026–2027 cycle. It is a global process guide, not a substitute for a local vacancy: role names, eligibility, application dates, assessments and work-authorisation rules are set by the office and job listing. As of 18 July 2026, McKinsey is recruiting for multiple roles globally, but there is no single worldwide deadline or application status.
For many client-facing consulting roles, the sequence is an online application, a possible test or game such as McKinsey Solve, and interviews containing a Personal Experience Interview (PEI) and a problem-solving interview. Specialist and experienced-hire processes can add expertise interviews.
| Item | Global position |
|---|---|
| Main entry roles | Business Analyst, Associate and role-specific internships; titles vary locally |
| Candidate routes | Undergraduate, master's, MBA, advanced-degree and experienced-hire |
| Application status | Role- and office-specific; check the live job search |
| Documents | Resume/CV required; transcript and cover letter depend on the role |
| Assessment | A test or game may be required; Solve is common but not universal |
| Interviews | PEI and problem-solving interview for many consulting roles; expertise interviews where relevant |
| Deadline | No global date; use McKinsey's campus-deadline tool or the live vacancy |
Roles available
McKinsey recruits generalist consultants and specialists. Its student careers page separates undergraduate, MBA and advanced-professional-degree routes. Common campus titles include Business Analyst and Associate, with internships aligned to local levels. Experienced professionals should apply to the level and practice shown in the live listing rather than translating a title from another country.
A role is available only when it appears in the McKinsey job search. Programme names, eligible graduation windows and start dates are local facts; a US campus page does not establish eligibility for London, Dubai or Singapore.
Eligibility requirements
Confirmed
- The relevant job description controls degree, graduation-date, experience, language and location requirements.
- McKinsey recruits students from undergraduate, MBA and advanced professional degree routes, as well as experienced professionals.
- Candidates must provide truthful education and work-history information and comply with the assessment rules in their invitation.
Office- or role-dependent
- Degree discipline, graduation window and required experience.
- Local-language proficiency.
- Existing work authorisation or eligibility for sponsorship.
- Academic transcript and standardised-test information.
McKinsey does not publish one global minimum grade or GPA for all consulting roles. Do not treat a requirement from one university or office as a worldwide threshold.
Application deadlines and timeline
McKinsey publishes a campus application deadline tool for student consulting roles. Some offices use fixed campus windows; others publish several intakes. For example, McKinsey's 2026 Switzerland entry-level schedule lists multiple annual deadlines.
| Timing point | What is confirmed globally |
|---|---|
| Opening and closing dates | Determined by the role, academic programme and office |
| Assessment timing | Sent to applicable candidates after submission; invitation instructions control |
| Interview period | Communicated by the local recruiting team |
| Offer and start date | Role-specific and not published as one global timetable |
If the 2027 vacancy is not live, do not reuse a 2026 deadline without labelling it historical. Record the closing time and time zone as well as the date.
How to apply
- Search for the exact role and location in McKinsey's official job search.
- Check the candidate route, graduation window, office choices and deadline in that listing.
- Create or reuse a candidate-portal account. McKinsey says one account can hold draft and submitted applications.
- Enter the requested education, test-score and work-history information.
- Select only the office or practice preferences offered by that application.
- Upload the requested documents without password protection and submit before the local deadline.
McKinsey says candidates can upload updated documents through Manage Profile after submission. If office or practice preferences change after submission, candidates should contact their recruiter or application support rather than creating a duplicate application.
Documents required
| Document or information | Status |
|---|---|
| Resume/CV | Required globally by McKinsey's application FAQ |
| Education and work history | Requested, with fields depending on the role |
| Office or practice preferences | Requested where the role offers choices |
| Transcript | Role-dependent; an unofficial copy is acceptable when requested and an official copy is unavailable |
| Cover letter | Optional or role-dependent, not a universal requirement |
| Standardised-test scores | May be requested; candidates who have not taken the listed tests can say so |
Recruitment process
1. Application review
The firm reviews the submitted profile and documents against the selected role. McKinsey does not publish a universal response time.
2. Test or game
McKinsey's interviewing guidance says client-facing candidates may be asked to complete a test or game. Solve is used for many consulting applications, but the modules, duration and applicability can change. Follow the invitation rather than assuming another candidate's format applies to you.
3. Interviews
Many consulting interviews combine a PEI discussion about a specific past experience with a problem-solving interview. The number of interviews and whether they are remote or in person are set locally. Technical, implementation and specialist candidates may also receive expertise interviews or work samples.
4. Offer and checks
Successful candidates receive office-specific offer, start-date and pre-employment-check instructions. McKinsey does not publish one global duration from application to offer.
Office selection and mobility
Available office and practice preferences appear in the application. The number of choices is not globally fixed. Language, staffing model and work-authorisation rules can make an office unavailable even when a candidate is interested in it. If preferences change after submission, ask recruiting support to update them.
Do not assume that applying to one office creates an application to every office in that country or that an application can be transferred internationally.
Reapplication policy
McKinsey does not publish one global waiting period covering every rejection, role and office. A recruiter may provide a role-specific timeline. Until that is confirmed, treat the reapplication period and the reuse of any assessment result as unknown.
Visa sponsorship and work authorisation
Visa policy is office- and role-specific. The global application FAQ does not promise sponsorship for every consulting vacancy. Check the live job description and ask the local recruiting team if the listing does not resolve the issue. This article does not infer sponsorship from another McKinsey office.
Common application mistakes
- Applying to a role outside the stated graduation or experience window.
- Treating a campus interest form or recruiting event as a job application.
- Assuming every applicant receives Solve or the same Solve configuration.
- Uploading password-protected files.
- Using another office's deadline, document list or language rules.
- Creating a duplicate application instead of updating documents or contacting support.
- Assuming visa sponsorship where the vacancy is silent.
Frequently asked questions
Is a cover letter required?
Not globally. McKinsey lists it as an example of an additional attachment; the job listing and application form decide whether it is requested.
Can I update my resume after applying?
Yes. McKinsey's application FAQ says updated documents can be uploaded through Manage Profile in the candidate portal.
Can I apply without an official transcript?
When a transcript is requested, McKinsey says an unofficial scanned or exported copy can be submitted if an official copy is not yet available.
Can I change office preferences?
McKinsey directs submitted candidates to contact their recruiter or application support.
Does every consulting applicant take Solve?
McKinsey says candidates may be asked to complete a test or game. It does not publicly confirm that every consulting applicant worldwide takes Solve.
How long does the process take?
No global duration is published. The timetable depends on the role, office and recruiting cycle.
